Summary

The bestselling author of The Designer presents a sweeping story of blind faith, family allegiance and how love makes one man question everything he thought he knew。

Max Wolff is a committed soldier of the Reich。 So when he is sent home wounded, only to discover that his mother is sheltering two young Jewish women in their home, he is outraged。

His mother’s act of mercy is a gross betrayal of everything Max stands for。 He has dedicated his life to Nazism, fighting to atone for the shame of his anti-Hitler father’s imprisonment。 It’s his duty to turn the sisters over to the Gestapo。 But he hesitates, and the longer Max fails to do his duty, the harder it becomes。

When Allied bombers fill the skies of Germany, Max is forced to abandon all dogma and face the brutality of war in order to defend precious lives。 But what will it cost him?

Excellent well written ww2 novelA great story another view point not often addressedCovers war in Germany and the suffering and cruelty that the Citizens and Soldier’s suffered in Germany very good read

Patti

Just a bit too simplistic and pat for my tastes, and for the time period written about。The writing itself was good, but the story was just too far-fetched。

Laverne Cwiklowski

Wonderful novel!Loved it!!! Read it in two days! Wanted the story not to end! So heartbreaking but loved the way it ended。 You are a gifted writer, Marius!

MaxThe Girls in the Attic is a difficult book to get through。 It intertwined the lives of two Jewish girls and one German soldier。 It follows them through their relationship until the end of the way。 Very descriptive。

A great bookI read this in one day。 I had been sick and it made me smile。 I also cried。 This is well written and researched。 It made WWII come alive for me。

ExcellentWhat a great read。 I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes historical fiction books。 Several times I was on the edge of my seat about what was going to happen。 Great book

Love Conquers AllIn spite of the atrocities and horrors of WWII and the loss of everyone she held dear, Lola finds love and eventual inner peace。

Incredible bookThis is a wonderful book, the history of Germany is accurate; the characters are memorable。 I very much enjoyed this book

Jutta

It was okay。 Typical Nazi and Jewish girl fall in love。 Just reminded me again how senseless and brutal war is, on both sides。

This is a powerful story set in WWII Germany。 I thought that some of the scenes of anger between two leading characters went on a bit too long。 But WOW, it was worth it to get beyond it。 This is a sweeping story involving three generations。 So much deep, sweet love presented in a modest way。 It shows selflessness, passion。 committment and the ability to change what we believe。 I found myself thinking about the book when I wasn't reading and actually read 7 hours straight because I was hooked on This is a powerful story set in WWII Germany。 I thought that some of the scenes of anger between two leading characters went on a bit too long。 But WOW, it was worth it to get beyond it。 This is a sweeping story involving three generations。 So much deep, sweet love presented in a modest way。 It shows selflessness, passion。 committment and the ability to change what we believe。 I found myself thinking about the book when I wasn't reading and actually read 7 hours straight because I was hooked on where the story took the characters。 Although the underlying theme is Nazis and their carnal savagery towards Jews, the story examines the subtext of how real human beings were caught in the madness。 It showed that all Germans werent Nazis and all Jews weren't caught and murdered。If you're looking for an absorbing story that's well written, this is it。 。。。more

Hauntingly beautiful, yet devastating in its horror, this story manages to effortlessly merge fact and fiction to create a huge impact。 The reader is compelled to keep following the story, despite the often harrowing depictions, by the subtle weaving of love and courage throughout the pages。 A book which will stay with me for a long time。

Wow。This book pulled me in from the beginning。 To think what people did just to survive。 War is never won。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 It was ok。 The framework was there, I just needed it to be better writing。 The ending is poignant。 After all she’s been through, 65 yrs on, her own daughter didn’t care to understand。

Perhaps too many commas to start out the story but it flows。 I never lived or loved through a war so not sure anyone would like this book。 It was much easier to connect with the female characters。 Lots of tragedy and some romance。 It drives home that war is a huge waste of time and resources。

Suzanne Duffelmeyer

Incredible- Excellent- Chilling and Gripping At times I was afraid to continue reading this book。 I t scared me。 But I pursued it to the end。 Very interesting, from a German point of view I found that this was a real page turner as they say。 Could not put it down!! I definitely recommend this book to others interested in WWII。

Wonderful storyYet another thought provoking book。 Draws you into what Lola and her family went through and also how max could change from where had come from too who Lola fell in love with

I found this a mixed read。 The sections that dealt with the war and particularly the action scenes were really well done。 It was interesting to see this from a German perspective with a sense that in war, both sides have heroes and villains。The romance side added a sense of light in a fairly dark book。 Some of the language and dialogue felt a little unrealistic and straight from a corny romantic novel。Overall, a good read and I'll look into the author's other work。 I found this a mixed read。 The sections that dealt with the war and particularly the action scenes were really well done。 It was interesting to see this from a German perspective with a sense that in war, both sides have heroes and villains。The romance side added a sense of light in a fairly dark book。 Some of the language and dialogue felt a little unrealistic and straight from a corny romantic novel。Overall, a good read and I'll look into the author's other work。 。。。more

One of the best books I've read。 The plot was amazing!! I also enjoyed the fact there wasn't any foul language in it。 (If there was any it was very little。) I want to read more books by this author。 One of the best books I've read。 The plot was amazing!! A beautifully written story finding, and losing love, family and friendships during a brutal and savage war。 The story starts and ends with elderly Lola, teliing her story to her eldest daughter, a story that includes how Maggie, the daughter came to be。 As the story starts, we meet Max, a young Nazi Panzer commander, who is home on leave after being injured。 Max, to his disgust, disvovers his widowed mother is hiding 2 Jewish girls in her attic。 We discover that Max's deceased father was a prea A beautifully written story finding, and losing love, family and friendships during a brutal and savage war。 The story starts and ends with elderly Lola, teliing her story to her eldest daughter, a story that includes how Maggie, the daughter came to be。 As the story starts, we meet Max, a young Nazi Panzer commander, who is home on leave after being injured。 Max, to his disgust, disvovers his widowed mother is hiding 2 Jewish girls in her attic。 We discover that Max's deceased father was a preacher, who regularly denounced Hitler and the actions of the Nazis。 The story is told so well and the characters so real, it is difficult not to see them in your mind's eye, and to feel for them。 While the story may be far from historically accurate, it is alive and the human spirit soars。       。。。more

An entertaining, yet difficult read about WWII and the horrific period for humanity that it was。 I enjoyed getting to know the characters, though the story felt very predictable at times。 Nevertheless, it was a quick, interesting read that kept me up late into the night。

Excellent readWonderful story told with compassion。 I smiled with a tale of stubborn youth and cried with adults trying to cope as best they could with war looming ever closer。

This book started off great, then veered into some romance, that I don't enjoy。 I haven't read a WW2 novel in a long time, but I think this depicted more brutality that others I have read。 The events rang true, just not what I like reading about。 If you have a strong stomach and enjoy romance this book is probably great for you。 It just was just not a great book for me although it was well-written and the characters were good and vivid。 This book started off great, then veered into some romance, that I don't enjoy。 I haven't read a WW2 novel in a long time, but I think this depicted more brutality that others I have read。 The events rang true, just not what I like reading about。 If you have a strong stomach and enjoy romance this book is probably great for you。 It just was just not a great book for me although it was well-written and the characters were good and vivid。 。。。more

I must be on a WWII trend this year。 All the heartbreak, wrong-headed-thinking, deprivations, fear, getting used to living in terrifying conditions, deciding to go on, are covered in the plot of this book。 Can't say it was enjoyable due to the topic, but kept me reading。 I must be on a WWII trend this year。 All the heartbreak, wrong-headed-thinking, deprivations, fear, getting used to living in terrifying conditions, deciding to go on, are covered in the plot of this book。 Can't say it was enjoyable due to the topic, but kept me reading。 。。。more

Girls in the AtticThe difficulties of war and relationships during impossible times come to light in this emotional story。 It is so difficult to, even in our best imagining, understand what war torn countries and their populations go through during the worst of times。 This book takes us there, and yet keeps us reading with hope of futures and freedoms yet to be experienced。 I will recommend this novel to others。

A story of swIM jewsThe story moved along as expected。 The last quarter of the story was a bit surprising。 A few different twists to an old story。

I like the idea of a novel focused on internal transformation。 After all, the United States has a history of racism, similar to the history of anti-Semitism。 How do we change people's perspectives? Well written historical fiction but not for the faint of heart! This is the most concrete, specific, detailed description of the horrors of WWII Germany that I’ve ever read and I’ve read many。 It is definitely not a romanticized version although there is a romance involved。 The romance begins in a bit of a clichéd manner…girl meets boy, they fight, then too rapidly love。 Also there is a bit too much unnecessary explanation of the point being made。 Unnecessary because the story is well written en Well written historical fiction but not for the faint of heart!
